GROWTH AND SUSTAINABILITY AS A GLOBAL CHALLENGE

Aarhus Symposium 2012 took a forward-looking perspective on global challenges. While benefits of globalisation are commonly recognised, the challenges that arise through greater interdependence of countries and citizens are multifaceted and somewhat obscure. There is no doubt, however, that greater interdependence is followed by greater responsibilities and demands.

With 13 prominent speakers as a starting point, Aarhus Symposium 2012 focused on interchanging ideas and experiences. The participating students gained insights into central decision makers’ attitudes towards global growth and sustainability, and they were encouraged to take an active part in the debates. This provided a solid ground for innovative and interdisciplinary solutions to the future challenges.

BATTLE OF THE ECONOMISTS 2012

DENMARK’S CHALLENGES

In the near future, Denmark faces great challenges on the global scene. The list of examples is long: Increasing globalisation and interdependence, increasing standards with respect to sustainability and social responsibility, weakening competitive position, and adaption to technological progress. The development of these concerns seems only to be accelerating year after year, but more importantly: they will most certainly constitute the main issues when participants at Aarhus Symposium enter the business world in a few years.

At Battle of the Economists 2012, these issues were interpreted in a broader Danish perspective. We invited three renowned Danish economists to discuss the challenges that are most critical to them. Of course, they have also been asked to share one or more concrete solutions with the participants before engaging in a debate with the audience, the mediator, and the two other economists.
