THE ROLE OF INNOVATION IN A COMPETITIVE GLOBAL ECONOMY
In 2013, Aarhus Symposium continued to consider the perspective of global challenges of the future. A wide range of exciting and engaging speakers shared their experiences and insights regarding the overall theme. The focus was on the challenges that leaders, innovators, and entrepreneurs face in a post-crisis era. Innovation is crucial to maintain growth and jobs in the society. Companies are experiencing increased pressure to improve efficiency due to factors from globalisation. A requirement to survive is innovative processes and leadership is important in implementing key decisions successfully. We aimed to create a diverse programme, where the views of CEO’s of major companies as well as founders of smaller start-ups will be heard.

Benefits of globalisation are commonly recognised, but in a globalised world, there is also an increased pressure on each country, when ti comes to securing competitiveness and growth. Every week, we get several updates with new statics and rankings concerning the state of the Danish economy, and we are left with numerous questions:
What are Denmark’s greatest challenges right now? Which leadership challenges are we facing? Are we lacking behind when it comes to entrepreneurship and innovation – and, if so, what can we do to change this?
These are some of the themes that were explored in Battle of the Economists 2013 and put to three leading economists.

In 2013, the three challenge topics were put forward by Jim Hagemann Snabe, Co-CEO of SAP AG; Peter Beske Nielsen, managing director at BlackRock; and Nils Smedegaard Andersen, Group CEO at Mærsk Group.
Each of these leaders of today encouraged the students, and leaders of tomorrow, to write a challenge essay addressing a specific topic within the theme “Leadership and Innovation”.
