Visible or not, power is truly embedded in leadership
In 2016 Aarhus Symposium delved into the theme “The Art of Power”. Visible or not, power is truly embedded in leadership. However, possessing power does not necessarily imply that others follow your lead. To understand the art of power is therefore necessary to become a great leader. Leaders who successfully manage this art can accomplish extraordinary things. Power is indeed a very complex matter. It is in no way static as it evolves in relation to states, businesses, and individuals.
At Aarhus Symposium 2016, we invited fourteen leaders and key decision-makers to give their perspective on the theme. They contributed to an understanding of how you put power into practice through four subtopics: Industry Power, People Power, Digital Power, and Geopolitical Power. Hereby, they shed light on the possibilities and limitations related to power – today and tomorrow.

AARHUS SYMPOSIUM FOCUS 2016
DEMOGRAPHIC CHANGES – HOW WILL WE WORK, AGE, AND LIVE?
Is the Danish economy powerless against changing demographics?
Denmark is facing the power of demographics. Within the Danish economy, increasing longevity creates major challenges for the welfare system and the labour market. Outside the Danish borders, international demographic changes add further complexity to these issues. The Danish economy will inevitably have to adapt to these shifts in the demographic composition, but how?
At Aarhus Symposium Focus 2016, three well-esteemed speakers shared their views on the future of Danish labour markets and welfare. In an economic discussion, the speakers provided national insights on this year’s overall theme of Aarhus Symposium Focus 2016.

AARHUS SYMPOSIUM CHALLENGE 2016
Aarhus Symposium Challenge is the students’ chance to secure a seat at Aarhus Symposium, Aarhus Symposium Focus, and to qualify for an exclusive session with one of the leaders of today. In 2016, almost 400 students form all universities in Denmark contributed with an essay.
The speakers participating in Aarhus Symposium Challenge 2016 were Peder Holk Nielsen, President & CEO at Novozymes; Jimmy Maymann, President at AOL Content & Consumer Brands; and Morten Albæk, Co-founder & CEO at Voluntas. They challenged the students to write an essay on the three different topics listed below:
Peder Holk Nielsen: Partnering for success – What strategic alliances can lead to better and more sustainable solutions across sectors and industries?
Jimmy Maymann: The influence of digitalisation – How can companies in the media and entertainment industry cope with changing consumer behavior due to increased digitalization?
Morten Albæk: Investing for impact – What social problems can be solved by making investments that both create profit and a positive social impact?
Leaders’ Forum 2016
On the day of Aarhus Symposium, the twelve students behind the most extraordinary and inspiring essays were invited to Leaders’ Forum. Here, they had the unique chance to meet and engage in dialogue with one of the three Challenge Speakers in an intimate one-hour session.
The author behind the very best essay and the winner of the Aarhus Symposium Award 2016 was Luke Koll Jerome McGinty. He contributed with an innovative essay on how The New York Times could regain a powerful position in the competitive news landscape.
”It is a forum with no boundaries. I was excited rather than nervous, because it is not a place where you have to perform. It is a place where you sit down with another person, without a large asymmetry or distance between you and the leader.”
