A MAZE OF ENDLESS CONNECTIONS

In 2018, Aarhus Symposium delved into the theme Creating Connections.

Connecting leaders of today with leaders of tomorrow is essential. Endless connections provide human-beings with the opportunity to shape and flourish the world that awaits us in the future. New discoveries and endless information enable both leaders and students to constantly connect in a maze of connections.

The world is changing in a rapid pace, making it hard for leaders to keep up. New inventions keep surpassing one another, therefore it is crucial for leaders to address the challenges created by them. In other words, the necessity for leaders to stay interconnected increases, as the modern world becomes progressively complex. Once individuals connect to form organisations, they face the challenges of operating in a global arena, and it takes skilful leaders to settle those challenges.

At Aarhus Symposium 2018, the aim was to create a visionary programme where 12 leaders and key decision makers gave their perspective upon the theme Creating Connections. Both leaders of today and leaders of tomorrow find themselves navigating in a maze of endless connections. As their paths crossed at Aarhus Symposium 2018, they united to discover new ways through this maze and into the future.

AARHUS SYMPOSIUM FOCUS 2018

MAKING AUTOMATION WORK

How shall the Danish labour market respond to increasing automation?

We stand on the brink of a revolution that will fundamentally alter the way we live, work, and interact with each other. In many industries, the most demanded competences did not even exist five years ago, and the pace of change is progressively accelerating. From the health sector to the financial sector, robots and advanced algorithms can now outperform human workers. Therefore, the outcome of automation will affect every aspect of the Danish society.

The theme of Aarhus Symposium Focus 2018 was “Making Automation Work”.

A panel of competent speakers with diverse backgrounds, ranging from manufacturers of robots to renowned economists, discussed the central points of automation and how the Danish labour market should respond. Technological development raises crucial questions about the broader impact of automation on jobs, competences, and wages. As labour is automated, how can leaders realise potential benefits of this technological revolution, while mitigating negative consequences?

AARHUS SYMPOSIUM CHALLENGE 2018

Aarhus Symposium Challenge is the students’ opportunity to secure their seats for Aarhus Symposium and Aarhus Symposium Focus. Furthermore, the students submitting the most inspiring essays are invited to participate in Leader’s Forum: an exclusive session with the leader whose challenge they addressed.

In 2018, all seats for Aarhus Symposium were secured through Aarhus Symposium Challenge.

The students are asked to share their thoughts in an essay on one of three challenges. Behind each challenge, a speaker has presented a topic in relation to the overall theme. The speakers participating in Aarhus Symposium Challenge 2018 were:

Niels B. Christiansen, CEO, The LEGO Group on how a company can enjoy the advantages of collaborating with others while protecting its core values.

Afshan Khan, Regional Director, Europe & Central Asia, UNICEF on one area in which every child does not have equal opportunities and a way to address this issue.

Ulrik Juul Christensen, Co-Founder & Executive Chairman, Area9 Group on How to achieve a specific competence that will be important on the future labour market.

LEADERS FORUM 2018

On the day of Aarhus Symposium 2018, fifteen ambitious students with the most remarkable and inspiring essays were invited to participate in Leaders’ Forum 2018. This provided the students with the exclusive opportunity to meet and engage in dialogue with the speaker whose challenge they addressed.

The winner of the Aarhus Symposium Award 2018, Soraya Redondo Mezmizi, Master of Laws, University of Copenhagen. In her essay, she addressed Ulrik Juul Christensen’s challenge by discussing how adaptive learning technology can help students develop soft skills:

“Being out of your comfort zone means that you are developing as an individual. That is the best experience I can get from the Leaders Forum session at Aarhus Symposium”.

- Soraya Redondo Mezmizii, winner of Aarhus Symposium Challenge 2018
